Chiller supply gates every liquid-cooled deployment that still needs mechanical cooling. Vertiv says investments at its Tognana campus near Padua will double chiller production capacity in the region by the end of 2026, with a large-scale integrated testing laboratory to follow in early 2027, according to the company's release on PR Newswire. CEO Giordano Albertazzi tied the move to load, saying "AI is driving thermal demands that didn't exist two years ago." The campus has run since the 1960s and builds under the Liebert and Hiross precision cooling names. Vertiv disclosed no capital figure, no unit output, and no baseline for the word double.
Doubling is a ratio. Without a denominator it stays a press release, and no procurement team can model it. Vertiv does not say how many chillers leave Tognana today. It does not define the region that gets the doubled capacity, whether that means Italy, EMEA, or the pairing of Tognana and Castel Guelfo near Bologna that the company calls one of its main European technology hubs. No euro figure. No square meters of added floor, no headcount, no thermal rating for the laboratory, no load bank capacity, no stated ambient envelope beyond a reference to extreme temperature ranges. Vertiv's March 24 Americas announcement ran the same play, claiming roughly 7x regional capacity in South Carolina when fully ramped and about 45 percent more in Mexicali, with zero dollars attached to either.
Chiller capacity is a manufacturing problem. Chiller integration is an engineering problem, and it is the one that wrecks commissioning schedules. Supply water temperature out of the plant sets the approach the CDU can hold, which sets cold plate inlet temperature, which sets die temperature under sustained load. Every one of those handoffs gets specified by a different vendor on a different datasheet, and almost nobody tests the full chain as a single system before the equipment lands on a slab and the load banks come on. Vertiv bought Strategic Thermal Labs in April to work the seam between server-side liquid cooling and the infrastructure feeding it. Tognana is where the hardware has to prove it.
The demand math justifies the line. Vertiv's Q1 2026 backlog crossed $15 billion, more than double year over year, against $2.65 billion of quarterly revenue and full-year guidance raised to a range of $13.5 billion to $14.0 billion. One doubled chiller line in the Veneto does not clear that. Vertiv also agreed in March to buy ThermoKey, the Friuli heat exchanger and dry cooler builder, and closed that deal on June 12. Northern Italy now carries the chiller line, the heat rejection line, and the test lab that is supposed to tie them together.
NVIDIA has spent the past year telling operators that 45C supply water removes the need for mechanical chilling across most of the year in most climates. Vertiv says it will double chiller output. Both can hold. Warm-water rejection works until wet bulb climbs past the design point, and then the chiller is the only hardware standing between a GPU fleet and thermal throttling. A plant that runs 500 hours a year still gets bought, shipped, rigged, piped, and commissioned. What changes is the duty profile, from base load to insurance, and that reshapes sizing, redundancy, and how hard operators should push on turndown performance at part load.
Operators taking delivery in 2027 should demand witness test data captured at their own design ambient, with the CDU loop in circuit and the load banks driven to full rack density. Tognana already runs a Customer Experience Center built for witness testing, so the capability exists today. Vertiv has published no thermal rating for the new lab, no load bank capacity, and no ambient envelope. Get those three numbers in writing before signing a 2027 chiller order.
